Verbum Dei High School
was founded in 1962 by by Bishop Joseph Francis of the Society
of the Divine Word Missionaries to provide young men from Watts
and surrounding areas a quality education. The school is operated
by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and managed by the California
Province of the Society of Jesus, more commonly referred to
as the Jesuits. Verbum Dei became the second Jesuit Cristo Rey
model school when it converted to the model in 2002 (the first
is Cristo Rey Jesuit High School in Chicago). Verbum Dei now
serves 278 students, 148 of whom receive financial aid to help
subsidize their tuitions. 50% of the student body is African-American,
and 50% is Latino. The school serves students from Lynwood,
Gardena, Carson, Inglewood, Watts & South Los Angeles.
