OVERVIEW>>
Cristo Rey Jesuit High School was founded in
fall, 1996, by Jesuits from the Chicago Province of the Society
of Jesus, often referred to as Jesuits. The private college
preparatory school, the 46th Jesuit high school in the United
States, was opened to serve the needs of the Hispanic immigrant
population on the southwest side of the city, an area that
suffered from an overpopulated public high school and remarkably
high dropout rates. The Jesuits knew that families in the
neighborhood would not be able to pay the tuition necessary
to keep the doors open a private high school, so they developed
a corporate internship program to help fund the school and
to give students work experience in a variety of corporations
in the city. Cristo Rey now serves 500 students per year (many
of whom subsidize their tuition with financial aid from the
school) in a state-of-the-art campus on the southwest side.
The Corporate Internship Program has been replicated and now
serves as the ceterpiece of Cristo Rey model high schools
across the United States. Cristo Rey Jesuit High School happily
provides a home for the midwest offices of the Cristo Rey
Network of Schools.
