The CRNYHS Full-Time Volunteer Program

Mission Statement:
The Cristo Rey NY Volunteers aspire to demonstrate the Christian values of social justice, community and simplicity by serving Cristo Rey students in all aspects of their spiritual and intellectual growth.

The Program:
Cristo Rey New York High School is a coeducational, college preparatory Catholic school in East Harlem whose mission is to provide an affordable alternative to urban families for a small, quality, value-laden high school. The school is designed to reach students who would normally be unable to afford a Catholic or private secondary education. Volunteers serve the Cristo Rey community in various ways, such as teaching, moderating extra-curricular activities, coaching, and training and chaperoning students in support of the Corporate Work Study Program.

Full-time volunteers serve for two years, beginning in August and ending in July. They are required to have college degrees, and individuals with Spanish skills are preferred but not required. CRNYHS provides furnished housing, transportation, and medical insurance. A monthly stipend is provided to cover food and expenses, and an AmeriCorps Education award is potentially available.

Volunteers live in community with one another in the rectory building behind the school and take part in community and spiritual activities. The 2008-2009 community will consist of five volunteers. There will be an orientation in August that includes introductions to the Cristo Rey model, teaching techniques, classroom management, and professionalism.

Application Process:
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis without an official deadline. However, priority will be given to those applications received by March 1, 2008. Please contact Maggie Murphy at (212) 996-7000 ext.203, or mmurphy@cristoreyny.org with any questions.
