Dr. Landefeld is Fellow, Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. From 2012 through 2024, he served as Professor and Chair, Department of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and Physician-in-Chief, UAB Medicine. He previously founded the Division of Geriatrics at UCSF where he led the development of faculty in education, research, and leadership.

He is certified in internal medicine and geriatrics and serves as Treasurer of the American Board of Internal Medicine and President of the Association of Professors of Medicine. He previously served on the Boards of Holy Family Cristo Rey High School (Birmingham), UAB Health System, and UA Health Services Foundation. He is past-President of the Society of General Internal Medicine and an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. 

Landefeld received the BA degrees in History and Science from Harvard College and in Philosophy and Theology from Oxford where he was a Rhodes Scholar. He earned the MD degree from Yale University. He trained in internal medicine at UCSF, where he served as chief medical resident, and in general internal medicine and clinical epidemiology at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. 

He previously served on the Boards of Holy Family Cristo Rey High School (now Cristo Rey Birmingham) and as a non-director member of the Cristo Rey Network Board’s Corporate Work Study Program Committee in FY26.
