In the fall of 1999, a middle school tutoring project in Los Angeles introduced Dan and Sue White to Verbum Dei High School. The Whites became involved with Verbum Dei as tutors in Pre-Calculus and Algebra. After a semester, they transitioned into teaching upper division Calculus classes, and have done so ever since.
In addition to their support of Verbum Dei, the Whites have generously contributed an annual gift to every Cristo Rey school for the last three years. Elizabeth Goettl, President and CEO of the Cristo Rey Network, remarks, "Dan and Sue White's generosity in supporting every single Cristo Rey school speaks to their belief in each of our 12, 232 students."
Having met while attending Santa Clara University, Dan and Sue White certainly live out their Ignatian spirituality through service for others. "Dan and Sue White came to Verbum Dei with the Jesuits in 2000 and remain the nucleus of the Jesuit charism here. They value their Santa Clara Jesuit education and make every effort to promote and support Jesuit higher education with our students," says Verbum Dei President Stephen A. Privett, SJ.
Additionally, they have made a remarkable financial investment in the school as supporters of its Adopt-A-Student program, while also offering financial assistance to alumni who have had shortfalls in their financial aid packages.
Having been an integral part of the Verbum Dei community over the last two decades, Dan says he is "most grateful for being able to witness the growth of the school."
"The Whites know that Jesuit higher education benefits from the contributions of Cristo Rey students, and Cristo Rey students know the benefits that a Jesuit college education offers them and their communities. Dan and Sue are a credit to Jesuit education and Jesuit education is in debt to Dan and Sue," remarks Stephen A. Privett, SJ.
