Through the generosity of the Wilson Sheehan Foundation and other philanthropic partners, the Fund will help 13 Cristo Rey schools send their students to pre-college summer immersion programs across the country.
Launched in 2016, the Kenneth Hutchinson College Success Fund was established to extend seed resources to Cristo Rey schools with the goal of sustaining the Network's momentum in reaching 62% bachelor degree completion for Cristo Rey students across the country – the same rate as young people from families in the highest-income quartile. Over $370,000 has been granted specifically for pre-college summer immersion programs since the Fund's inception.
"Well-chosen pre-college summer immersion experiences have proven invaluable in helping Cristo Rey Network students to think beyond the schools most familiar to them and to become more comfortable with the wider range of institutions that may be a great fit for their postsecondary interests and ambitions" shared Stephanie Arias, Director of College Initiatives for the Cristo Rey Network, "We aim for all students to have the opportunity to participate in at least one pre-college summer program prior to graduation, and we are pleased to support schools in meeting this goal."
About Kenneth Hutchinson (1981-2017): Ken Hutchinson was a highly committed national voice on college access, specializing in strengthening admission to college for under-represented young people. Ken joined the Network in September 2015 as the Director of College Initiatives, providing support to college counselors and alumni advisors and all Network programming focused on improving Cristo Rey students' college match, access, and persistence outcomes.
Prior to joining Cristo Rey, he served Urban Prep Academies for nine years as a founding counselor and Director of College Counseling Programs. A first-generation college student and native Chicagoan, Ken earned a Bachelor's of Science in Education and Social Policy and a Masters in Communication from Northwestern University. He also obtained a certificate from Harvard University's Institute for Urban School Leaders in 2012.
The loss to Ken's family, to the important work he led, and to the entire Cristo Rey family is immeasurable. The legacy of Ken's accomplishments and his gift of self to his family will remain with the Cristo Rey Network and all those who knew and loved him.
