Incredible momentum underway for Cristo Rey students' continued postsecondary access and success.
March 10, 2021 – CHICAGO – Today, the Cristo Rey Network announced three new universities that collectively bring the movement to 64 University Partners, nationwide. The University of Portland, University of Denver, and California Lutheran University share a commitment to educating and supporting Cristo Rey students on their path to achieving a quality postsecondary education.
"Our University Partners are strategically selected to strengthen the number and diversity of affordable and academically rigorous institutions that our students can select from. Through a dynamic search process that affirms a university's commitment to facilitate the successful integration and graduation of first-generation college-bound students, our three newest partners have demonstrated a clear vision for our college goers, and we stand united in our shared goal of increasing college completion rates across the country", said Stephanie Arias, Cristo Rey Network Director of College Initiatives.
The University of Portland Paves the Way as Cristo Rey Network's First University Partner in Oregon
"We are so excited to be part of the Cristo Rey Network of University Partners. For many years, I have been so impressed with the success of Cristo Rey Network high schools as they educate and cultivate the talent of so many gifted, hard-working students who are often overlooked. We will do our best at UP to live up to the high standards of the Cristo Rey Network as we educate the hands, hearts and minds of Cristo Rey alumni at the university level," stated Herbert Medina, University of Portland's Provost.
Founded in 1901, and guided by the Congregation of Holy Cross, University of Portland has been consistently ranked as one of the top 10 universities in the West region, in fact currently ranked 2nd, and one of the top 10 'best values' in the West by U.S. News and World Report.
"As our first University Partner in the state of Oregon, we look forward to formalizing the partnership that has existed for years with De La Salle North Catholic High School (our Cristo Rey school in Portland) and expanding opportunities for students from across our network," stated Arias.
With a shared mission of "honoring faith and reason, Cristo Rey Network alumni will find that the University of Portland will strengthen their journey of integrated academic rigor and personal exploration.
"We have been fortunate to share a backyard and develop a strong relationship with our local Cristo Rey institution, De La Salle North Catholic High School. We look forward to broadening our relationships to other Cristo Rey institutions, nationally," stated Jason McDonald, Dean of Admissions.
